Like an air of Russia at theOpéra Bastille... The cultural establishment invites music andopera lovers to discoverAlexander Borodin's unique masterpiece, Prince Igor, from November 25 to December 26, 2019. This great Russian epic, famous for its Polovtsian Dances, questions"the responsibility of the leader towards his people".
We follow the story - here divided into two parts - of Igor, who, after relinquishing power to his brother-in-law's despotism to go into battle, is taken prisoner in the company of his son. A story that invites the audience to"rethink our own moral values", through"his refusal to pact with the enemy" and his return to his family.
The director, Barrie Kosky, attempts to underline"this universal need for ethics" by stripping the entire work of its most elementary folklore. All the same, this work remains an invitation to travel, and to discover, or rediscover, one of the most fascinating operas in the Russian repertoire. In short, an opportunity to escape for an evening to the land of Princes and Tsars... Shall we reserve a seat, folks?
