"Libiamo, libiamo ne' lieti calci...". You're bound to know this operatic aria, from one of Giuseppe Verdi's major works, La Traviata. A masterpiece that theOpéra Garnier offers classical music lovers with a new staging by Simon Stone from September 12 to October 16, 2019.
An opera inspired byAlexandre Dumas fils's novel La Dame aux Camélias, itself inspired by Abbé Prévost's story Manon Lescaut. And it's a story that quickly became a success: by opening his opera with a prelude for strings of unprecedented economy of means, Giuseppe Verdi is banking on the upheaval of conventions and norms. And it works! La Traviata"relentlessly exposes the violence of a society that preaches material pleasure", ultimately"sacrificing an innocent victim on the altar of bourgeois morality".
Simon Stone 's adaptation is more intimate, working"hand in hand with the repertory pieces". And an opera revisited with a certain modernity, while remaining faithful to the original. In 2020,Opéra Bastille will also be presenting Manon, by Jules Massenet, directly inspired by Manon Lescaut and similar in theme to La Traviata. How about opening up to opera, folks?
