A veritable UFO... TheOpéra Garnier is offering several performances of Yvonne, Princesse de Bourgogne, by composer Philippe Boesmans, from February 26 to March 8, 2020. A unique opera,"at once sordid and funny, unbelievably cruel yet irresistibly seductive", adapted from Witold Gombrowicz's play of the same name.
A princess who doesn't look like one... And for good reason:"she's ugly, apathetic and taciturn", as theOpéra Garnier explains. A princess who disturbs, who"irritates to excess" and ends up becoming"the object of constant mockery". Originally commissioned by theOpéra national de Paris in 2008, this work reveals"to the beholder all the darkness of the human soul".
Luc Bondy's staging, imagined at the time of its premiere in 2008, remains as disturbing as ever, even after the librettist's death in 2015. And a libretto that, like the score, retains the dark humor and cynicism so characteristic of the author and the play this opera is adapted from. It's a most intriguing and bizarre work, and one you need to discover urgently! Shall we reserve a seat, folks?
