The "Korean Healing Music and Dance" performance by the Busan National Gugak Center troupe draws on the rich rhythms and dances of southern Korea, promising a total cultural immersion.
At the invitation of the Korean Cultural Center, which is dedicating an exhibition to the bustling city of Busan, the Korean troupe will perform three historical dances, the Salpuri and Jinsoe dances, rooted in shamanic rituals, as well as the fascinating Buddhist Seungmu dance.
Recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of Korea, Seungmu dance is a tribute to Buddha. To the sound of the drum, it translates the emotions of a Buddhist monk apprentice trying to forget the anguish of his failed training. In fact, Seungmu is notable for its many invocations to Buddha and its honorary chanting, and is concluded by a striking shamanistic ceremony!
The Busan National Gugak Center troupe will also feature dances inspired by the Salpuri and Jinsoe shamanic rituals, Jinsoe being the dance historically performed by local chiefs from the countryside who were invited to represent themselves at the royal court. It has long been transmitted orally. The Salpuri dance was culturally performed by a shaman, with the desire to free the souls from the misfortunes of the past year.
A special tribute will be paid to Busan during Jinsoe's performance, with the Donghae-an Byeolshin-gut ritual - prayer for peace and abundant harvests - specific to the region, presented to the Parisian audience.
