Considered as Berlioz’s fourth symphony, Romeo and Juliet inspired many choreographers, including Maurice Béjart. Less known that the one by Prokofiev, it’s yet the one the German choreographer Sasha Waltz chose for her own choreography around William Shakespeare’s timeless and sublime work, the ultimate tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Maybe because Berlioz himself said he was a great admirer of the author and the work.
In 2007, when Sasha Waltz created her own version of the tragedy with Paris Opera Ballet, she decides to use only very simple and assumed decors and costumes. To make the young heroes at the center of the stage, to see them and only them. May they glow in all their emotions and their splendors, especially in wonderful shoeless and without fuzz pas de deux. Accompanies by singers and choirs, dancers will once again perform this clean adaptation that loses nothing of its beauty and its tragic strength on the stage of Opéra Bastille in Paris.
