First lady of the Third Reich, present at Adolf Hitler's side in the famous "Bunker " that was their tomb on May 1, 1945, Magda Goebbels' terrible destiny is little known: yet it is the tragic story of a mother who was six times an infanticide, a triple Medea, that is told on the stage of the Théâtre Tristan Bernard this autumn.
Magda Goebbels, Goebbels' wife, was deeply desired and an object of fascination for the men in power. To understand her story, little information has survived from the period, apart from a few letters from her husband.
The play's author, Christian Siméon, decided to recount the life of this woman in the form of a fictional correspondence. In his own words, "The playwright is not bound by historical truth; he can invent, fill in the blanks, (...) he is a storyteller."
Christian Siméon wrote the letters that make up the play "Bunker, Lettres de Magda Goebbels" to describe Magda Goebbels' terrifying destiny: "first a free, generous young woman, full of that post-First World War lust for life, open to miscegenation, to foreigners, and in love with a Zionist Jew. Then radical, anti-Semitic and fanatical wife of Adolf Hitler. Finally, sextuple infanticide - Germany devouring its own children".
He is supported by a reading by Johanna Boyé, and the letters are brilliantly read on stage at the Théâtre Tristan Bernard by actors Julie Depardieu and Stefan Druet Toukaïeff, who give full depth to these characters from a terrible past in our history.
