Back to the end of the 19th century in early 2024, with a timeless play reinterpreted: Paul Claudel's "L'Échange", in its original 1894 version, returns to the stage at Théâtre Déjazet, from January 14 to February 4, 2024. This play was written during the author's exile in the United States in 1894, and stands out from the rest of his work for its spontaneity and narrative force.
At its heart, four characters embody the playwright's feelings and temptations. On the East Coast of the United States, Louis, the rebellious Indian newly married to Marthe, the submissive Frenchwoman, guard the estate of wealthy businessman Thomas Pollock Nageoire, and his wife Lechy, an actress with emancipated morals. Tensions and desires drive the members of this mismatched quartet apart, leading them to make a provocative deal: one offers to buy the other's wife...
Each, with their own contradictions, sketches out a complex vision of the contemporary world. The cast, made up of talents from the Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique de Paris, includes Pauline Cheviller, Sébastien Depommier, Gvantsa Lobjanidze and François Marais. With a musical sensibility and a wealth of stage experience, director Carmelo Agnello is committed to doing justice to Claudel's poetry.
The result is an uncommonly complete version of "L'Échange", distinguished by its authenticity: no changes have been made to the original text, preserving the entirety of Claudel's work for an entirely historically coherent theatrical experience, in which the drama and raw emotions of the period are brought to light.
Paul Claudel's "L'Échange", at Théâtre Déjazet, is a unique opportunity to rediscover a classic and see it in a new light to kick off the year 2024, from January 14 to February 4.
