People from Bilbao are born where they want to be by Maria Larrea is an autobiographical story in which the author explores her family roots and identity. Born in Bilbao to Spanish parents exiled under Franco's dictatorship, she grew up in France without knowing the whole truth about her family history. Through a personal quest, she uncovers long-buried secrets, notably around her adoption and the mysteries surrounding her true parentage. The book deals with the themes of exile, family secrets and the quest for identity with touching sensitivity, to which Bérénice Bejo should add her personal touch in the theatrical adaptation.

Maria Larrea 's first novel received rapid critical acclaim. Published in 2022, the book won the Prix du Premier Roman and the Prix des Inrockuptibles for first novel, as well as the Prix du Roman France Télévisions for 2023. This success explains why a stage adaptation of Les gens de Bilbao naissent où ils veulent (The People of Bilbao Are Born Where They Want ) was quickly launched, with a worthy actress in the shape of Bérénice Bejo .

French-Argentinian actressBérénice Bejo first came to public attention with her role in Michel Hazanavicius ' 2011 silent film The Artist , which earned her an Oscar nomination and the César for Best Actress. The actress went on to pursue an eclectic career, appearing in films such asAsghar Farhadi's Le Passé, for which she won the Best Actress award at Cannes. Today, she navigates between French and international cinema, but also with the theater in the awaited adaptation: Les gens de Bilbao naissent où ils veulent at Théâtre Marigny.
