During theRenaissance, FrançoisI engaged the services of Italian painters for his châteaux (notably the Château de Fontainebleau), but retained a soft spot for Flemish art. The exhibition François Ier et les arts aux Pays-Bas at the Musée du Louvre highlights this passion of King François Ier, who also surrounded himself with Dutch painters, often specializing in portraiture (Jean Clouet, Corneille de La Haye, Joos van Cleve), and acquired Flemish tapestries, silverware and paintings.
Thanks to the king's passion for Flemish art, the houses of Paris, Normandy, Picardy, Champagne and Burgundy adopted the Dutch style, as recent research has gradually revealed by resurrecting artists who had unjustly fallen into oblivion! Thus, the Louvre is bringing together Godefroy le Batave, Noël Bellemare, Grégoire Guérard and Bartholomeus Pons, many of whom are still anonymous but who distinguished themselves in France in book illumination, painting, stained glass and sculpture.
And on October 18, 2017, the Louvre will unveil the work that will be the subject of the new acquisition campaign, a work presented in the exhibition François 1er et les arts aux Pays-Bas. It will then be possible to take part in its acquisition by the Musée du Louvre as part of a call for donations Tous mécènes! until January 2018.
