From September 27, 2017 to July 2, 2018, the Petite Galerie of the Louvre Museum offers an exhibition called Power Plays that returns to the connections between art and political power through History.

Art as a mean to do and undo politics… this is the idea the exhibition Power Plays conveys from September 27, 2017 to July 2, 2018 at the Petite Galerie of the Louvre Museum. This exhibition is suited to children and tends to show the connection between art and political power through History. On the one hand, it’s at the service of sponsors and patrons, and on the other hand, this art can contest and shake up the public order.

To provide an easy access, this exhibition is scattered across four rooms:

  • The first one is dedicated to The prince’s figures presenting the king’s functions (priest, war chief…)

  • The second one, Convincing to justify power, gets on with showing art can be a propaganda vehicle and focuses on Henry IV and his various representations and on Louis XIV.

  • The third room, The ancient world, lingers over equestrian statues.

  • The last room, The insignia of power, displays portraits of monarchs and their pomps (we think about portraits of Louis XIV by Antoine-François Callet and of Napoleon 1st by François Gérard). A part of the room is also dedicated to historical and iconographic breaks related to the French Revolution.

The perfect exhibition to work on your History of France and discover the symbol around representations of the various monarchs of the county. If you are an history teacher, this is a great opportunity too for your students!
