2017 European Museum Night at the Institut des Cultures d’Islam

The Institut des Cultures d’Islam takes part in the 2017 Museum Night on Saturday 20 May from 6 p.m. to midnight, offering a tour of the current exhibition commented by the artistic director, Bérénice Saliou.

Museum Night offers the involved institutions the opportunity to offer the public a new eye on their collections. Some of them offer musical guided tours, some dances and other children activities… The Institut des Cultures d’Islam (Institute of Cultures of Islam) plays the simplicity card and opens its doors for free to the public and offers a guided tour of its exhibition, Rocks the Kasbah, in the company of the museum’s artistic director.

You are expected on Saturday 20 May at 8 p.m. for this free visit without prior subscription to discover Rock the Kasbah:

  • The exhibition title, Rock the Kasbah, has been chosen as a reference to the unforgettable song by the English band The Clash. Recorded in 1982, it echoed prohibition against listening to rock music in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Since then, it has been covered in 2004 by the French and Algerian singer, Rachid Taha. Impertinent and very punk, this song is first and foremost a humanist message of sharing between cultures; this is the reason the very amazing Institut des Cultures d’Islam, located in Paris 18th arrondissement, took inspiration from it to offer a season rich of arts and music.

  • The eponymous exhibition features contemporary artists interested in the challenging power of music, in the Muslim world as well as in Paris today, from the Barbès area to the Grands Boulevards area. Playing music in public area which is very important in the Muslim world is also explored.

  • Remember that this exhibition is doubled up as concerts (Berber rock, Algerian metal, Senegalese hip-hop, Palestinian rap, Sufis psalmodies), movie screenings, conferences about Islam, body and music and 20th century great female singers. The young public is not left out since movie screenings followed by an after-school snack are planned as well as shows, beatbox workshops, audiotape creation, music instruments production (on Wednesdays and school holidays).
