Self-taught artist, Paul Signac managed through his talent and work to climb up to the pantheon of the most famous painters of his generation. This art passionate did not only create. He always kept a watchful eye on works created by his peers and bought those he considered were the most valuable for his very own collection. This thorough selection led to an exceptional collection displayed from October 12, 2021 to February 13, 2022 by the Musée d'Orsay.
The Signac collectionneur exhibition enables us to enjoy the artist’s sharp eye and taste for impressionist and neo-impressionist paintings, portraits and colorful landscapes stamped with the typical softness of this blooming era for the world of art.
About 150 paintings are given pride of place in this exhibition telling the evolution of Paul Signac as an artist and a collector. From his debuts as a young artist with limited finances and growing friendships with impressionist painters of this time, enjoy Signac’s life.
Monet, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Gustave Caillebotte, Camille Pissarro, Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Armand Guillaumin… Paul Signac’s collection is a loyal reflection of the art scene of his time. Yet, you can notice bias and commitments of the artist who gives pride of place to his peers, leaving more great names or artistic movements of the mid-19th century behind, although a few paintings are surprising.
Comfortable without being wealthy, Paul Signac has had to think a lot about works he wanted to add to his collection. The painter used to only buy paintings with undeniable artistic value, works that could lead to powerful emotions.
The Signac collection displayed at the Musée d’Orsay is a gem to discover without thinking twice. You will be in awe in front of the techniques and colors used forcing one to step back and really admire the painting to enjoy is beauty.
