One exhibition, two venues! The Palais de Tokyo and Lafayette Anticipations are hosting an exhibition by artist Cyprien Gaillard, HUMPTY\DUMPTY, from October 19, 2022 to January 8, 2023. A reflection on"time, its traces, its effects, and the relationships that humans forge with it" to be precise, which the artist attempts to highlight in this diptych.
As the capital pampers its monuments and restores them in preparation for the Olympic Games, Cyprien Gaillard"reveals how the city constitutes a privileged terrain for the expression of entropy (degradation, disorder and unpredictability), and how, in turn, humans tend to fight against this state". A desire for order that the artist seeks in all those nooks and crannies and spaces of dissent that escape the construction site in progress.
The title, HUMPTYDUMPTY, refers to one of the characters in Lewis Carroll's novel, and more specifically to the sequel toAlice in Wonderland, De l'Autre Côté du Miroir. Humpty Dumpty is an egg-shaped character who falls off a wall and shatters into a thousand pieces. A character who,"despite many attempts, will never be able to return to his original state", much like the subject of this exhibition.
The Palais de Tokyo exhibition HUMPTY is the first chapter in this project. It brings together a selection of previously unseen works by the artist and invited guests. The idea? To highlight"the relationship between the body and architecture, abandoned territories, evocations of war and invasive species" through"a portrait of our link to collapse and reconstruction".
For the exhibition at Lafayette Anticipations, DUMPTY, Cyprien Gaillard brings back to life a monumental sculpture installed in the heart of the capital since 1979, in the Horloge district, Le Défenseur du Temps. An automaton, to be precise, representing a man perched on a rock, equipped with a sword and a shield, whom the artist attempts to revive by taking up his movements in a perpetual battle against time.
Two exhibitions that echo each other, to be discovered for a complete panorama. Shall we go, friends?
