When Faith Ringgold meets Pablo Picasso, it ends up with a colorful and surprising exhibition, a fascinating culture shock uplifting both artists’ work.
From January 31 to July 2, 2023, the Musée Picasso invites us to discover the Faith Ringgold exhibition. A retrospective focusing on the African-American painter enabling us to discover a major artist of committed art in the United-Sates. Enjoy a whole bunch of pieces telling about her career and fights of the New-York artist who learnt the ropes in Harlem, the neighborhood of arts and renewal in New York.
Faith Ringgold is especially famous for her paintings and mosaics, her sculptures and quilted pieces. In her work, the artist shows the difficulties and unfairness impacting the most underprivileged classes and the Black communities in the United States. Therefore, she shows support to the fight for civil rights and all the way up to the Black Lives Matter movement.
Educated and passionate, Faith Ringgold also pays interests to European artists and especially the Parisian art scene from the early 20th century, the golden age for artists from all around the world who gathered in the City of Lights. And among them stands a certain Pablo Picasso whose paintings shock the American painter.
This exhibition delivers a great retrospective about Faith Ringgold's incredible career who painted American culture her own way. Deeply marked by segregation and discriminations she suffered from as a Black woman, she wanted to show the beauty of African-Americans, their dramatic stories, their moving works. Through her paintings, the artist tells us about her life and career.
The Musée Picasso offers us to discover Faith Ringgold’s universe, her inspirations, commitments and pieces that fed her work. A never-before-seen retrospective in France you do not want to miss!
