Germaine Richier is given pride of place from March 1 to June 12, 2023, at Centre Pompidou with a wide retrospective exhibition.

She was the first female artist to be displayed at Centre Pompidou when she was still alive: about 70 years later, the national museum of modern art devotes a new retrospective exhibition to this renown sculptor who manage to stood off thanks to her talent and innovations. From March 1 to June 12, 2023, come and enjoy the Germaine Richier exhibition and (re)discover this French artist who long-lastingly marked the world of art.

She survived two world wars, went beyond gender stereotypes and defeated prejudices to maker herself a spot at the top of her art: Germaine Richier was a surprising and intense character in the world of sculpture. Nicknamed “The Hurricane", the artist experienced a swift and eventful career.

Germaine Richier first met success with her portraits. For each face, each body came along with a quest for truth. To do so, she digs in emotions, created marked, holed, scratched busts. These statues are full of life, far from her time’s plain and quiet ideal.

The sculptor also explores the themes of Human and Nature, creating hybrid shapes between the two, reinventing chimeras and legendary creatures. The artist draws inspiration from what surrounds her, finding in a brick, an olive tree branch, the very topic of her next piece. Centre Pompidou unveils this creative process, displaying all of her materials and inspiration sources along the way.

Among the 200 pieces displayed, enjoy a part of her sculptures, drawings and paintings devoted to the sacred and mystical. As the highlight of this part, enjoy – for the first time in Paris – the Christ d’Assy, one of Richier’s masterpieces that sparked a huge polemic in the early 1950’s.

Drawing, engraving, experimentation on colors and materials… Richier always managed to renew herself, challenged herself to invent and express her interrogations and opinions. Today still, she remains one of the leading names of the world of art and sculpture from the 20th century.

You cannot miss this artist and her exhibition at Centre Pompidou!
