They are the forgotten figures of modern art: the Musée Marmottan Monet highlights the Neo-Romantics in an exhibition on view from March 8 to June 18, 2023.

The history of art is made of renewal, rebellion, innovations and return to the sources. If the greatest artistic movements have been remembered, certain currents have been forgotten over time, sometimes unjustly. The Marmottan Monet Museum has therefore decided to give back its letters of nobility to one of them, by organizing a new exhibition on a minor movement of modern art.

From March 8 to June 18, 2023, discover Neo-Romantics. A Forgotten Moment in Modern Art 1926-1972, a painting exhibition that brings together nearly one hundred works from private and public collections.

These paintings and these painters, today little known, have nevertheless participated in forging and inspiring the great works of the twentieth century. Several international artists are honored in this exhibition, such as Christian Bérard, Pavel Tchelitchew, Eugène and Leonid Berman or Kristians Tonny. These post-modern artists militated for a return to the figure, in opposition to the abstract movement that was then in vogue.

These young artists rejected the codes of their time, without wanting to return to the previous artistic currents: they founded something new, which reintroduces the human figure in painting.

We find in these works characters and portraits, but whose representation is marked by the world of the abstract. The bodies melt with the decor, the expressions are intense, often serious, the scenes are dark and serious. It must be said that the two world wars had a strong impact on these artists. We see in their works the beginnings of the surrealist movement.

The Neo-Romantics are American, Russian, Italian, English, French, Dutch, Greek... We find them in painting, of course, but also in the world of entertainment, in fashion, in ballet and opera, in literature.

This exhibition surprises, as much by its richness as by the diversity of its works. It is impossible to confuse the paintings of Leonid Berman or Pavel Tchelitchew, as their styles and subjects are so different. And yet, there is a common denominator in all these works. There is a passion, even an obsession forman and his emotions. We find landscapes and scenes almost surrealist, which question the place of the man in his environment... The human being is at the heart of these fascinating paintings.

The diversity of genres means that we are bound to find an artist who will immediately touch our hearts in this journey full of surprises. The Marmottan Monet Museum succeeds in its mission to make us discover and love these forgotten painters.

These artists bridge the gap between the beginning and the end of the 20th century. They have influenced the most famous artists of this period, and have left their mark on the art world. It is therefore time to (re)meet them, in the aisles of the Marmottan Monet Museum. Shall we go there?
