Multi-awarded artist, Françoise Pétrovitch settles down in the museum of the Romantic Life, for a big exhibition around the love and the couple. From April 5 to September 10, 2023, come and admire Aimer. Rompre, the new exhibition ofcontemporary art that questions our vision of feelings and attachment.
Draughtswoman, painter, sculptor: Françoise Pétrovitch has more than one string to her bow. Her universe and her talent are already widely appreciated on the contemporary art scene. The artist has had a string of exhibitions: you may remember her works, exhibited at the Musée de la Vie Romantique in 2020, for the exhibition Hearts, Romanticism in Contemporary Art.
In the spring of 2023, Françoise Pétrovitch returns to this timeless museum for a new solo artistic adventure. Paintings, sculptures and drawings will invade the different spaces of the museum, from the house to the gardens and the workshops.
Through these creations, the Frenchwoman explores questions that plague us all. Where does the feeling of love come from , what are the doubts and uncertainties that make couples tremble, what are the gestures and signs that are part of the language of love? So many questions that are staged by the artist.
By visiting this exhibition, you will explore the themes of landscape and the feeling of love. The artist Françoise Pétrovitch makes you discover her creations specially conceived for the museum, combining poetry and strangeness. Let yourself be guided by a sensitive stroll, to meet her new works.
The exhibition route unfolds in all the spaces of the museum, offering an immersive experience to visitors. You will begin in the studio-lounge, where you will discover the work of the artist for the museum. The lower room of the large studio presents a panorama of ink washes on paper, evoking the Romantics' new view of nature in the 19th century.
In the upper room of the large studio, you will be confronted with very large paintings featuring young people of today, questioning the bond between two people.
The exhibition continues in the house, where paintings, drawings and art objects by the artist are scattered throughout the permanent collections, offering a contemporary interpretation of the museum's romantic figures.
Finally, in the center of the garden, the sculpture L'Ogresse challenges visitors, playing on traditional codes of power representation and announcing the triumph of the feminine.
The subtitle of the exhibition, "Love. Rompre," refers to Françoise Pétrovitch's early works, which were literally placed in the margins of printed notebooks or books that she reappropriated. This choice of title highlights the ambiguity of our feelings, often fickle and contradictory, and the theme of the "in-between", emblematic of the artist's thinking.
As you walk through the exhibition, you will be immersed in imaginary, deserted and disturbing landscapes, inviting you to melancholic contemplation. In the heart of this dreamlike nature appear strange human figures: solitary and pensive women, couples with mixed bodies. These characters, with hair resembling trees or other natural motifs, seem to be diluted in the landscape, which makes their presence unreal.
Françoise Pétrovitch has been interested in adolescence for many years, as thisperiod of life is marked by the discovery of love, the fragility of feelings and questions about identity. Her work explores the metamorphosis of the body and mind through evocative, sometimes poetic, sometimes disturbing representations.
The art of Françoise Pétrovitch: an invitation to introspection
The work of Françoise Pétrovitch addresses the senses as much as the intellect. Visitors are invited to let themselves be carried away by the emotions that her creations arouse, while questioning their own relationship to love, break-up and the search for identity. The artist thus manages to reach a large audience, touched by the universality of these themes.
