The Bourdelle Museum invites us to discover an exceptional exhibition dedicated to the contemporary artist Philippe Cognée. From March 15 to July 16, 2023, we go to discover the singular universe of this great French figurative painter.
This retrospective is a unique opportunity to dive into the world of Cognée, who has given a new impetus to figurative painting since the 1980s. The exhibition entitled"La peinture d'après" presents unique canvases, made with encaustic and then reworked with an iron, offering blurred and trembling visions, characteristic of the artist's work.
The exhibition also includes early paintings, demonstrating the importance of optical saturation and the reinvestment of past paintings in Cognée's work. A unique installation of 1,200 pieces, made from sheets of catalogs from the contemporary Art Basel fair, is also on view. This installation is an opportunity for visitors to discover how the artist created a covering painting, which sees the artist painting a motif that disappears as he copies it, creating a history of forms.
The exhibition is presented in the new extension of the Bourdelle Museum, which simultaneously unveils its new face. One can discover not only the world of the contemporary artist, but also the modern and minimalist spaces of the museum.
The exhibition concludes with a large exhibition room, presenting some fifteen previously unseen paintings, weaving formal links between Antoine Bourdelle's sculptures and the plant kingdom, recalling the importance of the sculptural character in Cognée's work.
The permanent collection of the Musée Bourdelle also awaits you free of charge during this reopening, offering you a plunge into the universe of the sculptor. This exhibition is an opportunity for art lovers and enthusiasts to discover the fascinating world of the contemporary artist Philippe Cognée, in an exceptional place renovated and redesigned.
