A surprising encounter between two artists and two worlds... TheInstitut Giacometti is devoting an exhibition to the work ofAlberto Giacometti and Salvador Dali, entitled Alberto Giacometti/Salvador Dali. Gardens of Dreams, from December 13, 2022 to April 9, 2023. The exhibition "brings together the work of Alberto Giacometti and Salvador Dalí in an unprecedented way, around the creation of an imaginary garden in the early 1930s", with the aim of highlighting their unique friendship and their shared taste "for the exploration of dreamed spaces".
Members of the Surrealist group, the two artists frequented the same circles and debated passionately. In the '30s, they brought their work together by imagining a joint "extraordinary garden" for the Viscount and Viscountess de Noailles. An artistic creation known through numerous drawings, and consisting of surrealist works imagined by Alberto Giacometti, arranged within a "vast dreamlike landscape characteristic of Dalí's style", the Projet pour une place.
For the exhibition, theInstitut Giacometti is offering a reconstruction of this work, illustrating "the concept of the garden shared by Giacometti and Dalí, and their taste for ambiguous forms and images". An exhibition that "explores the deep links between Dalí's dreamlike canvases and Giacometti's enigmatic sculptures, which are imbued with the same research into landscape, sexuality and dreams".
