How well do you really know the National Gendarmerie? Although they are everywhere in France to protect our cities and their inhabitants, the gendarmes and their missions are sometimes misunderstood, confused with the police. Since 1791, the gendarmerie has taken over from the centuries-old maréchaussée and is responsible for internal security. Until June 18, 2023, come and discover the history of this military force during an exceptional exhibition at the Musée de la Gendarmerie Nationale in Melun.
The exhibition is based on the five actions of the gendarmerie: surveillance, information, law enforcement, protection and rescue. What do the gendarmes do for the citizens? How does information circulate between the different security actors? What are the expectations of the judicial and economic world regarding the action of the gendarmes? So many questions that you will find answers to in this exhibition, which shows usunusual collection objects : badges, maps, sketches or even a cinemometer.
In the different rooms, you will discover interviews of security actors, the way the gendarmes gather information, the different working tools and so many other specificities of the job. For the youngest, a visit is specially designed for children, so that they can easily understand the missions of the gendarmes. A program of conferences and debates is also proposed, in particular on the deontology of surveillance, where the public will be able to be judge and will proceed to a final vote.
