Between Renaissance art and modern times, between painting and photography, between the real and the imaginary... Sabine Pigalle has built her art on boundaries. On this fine line, the artist amuses herself and encourages viewers to adopt new points of view, to pay attention to these new works that seem so familiar...
Sabine Pigalle is exhibiting her photographic paintings at the Musée Jean-Jacques Rousseau, from June 3 to October 29, 2023. This exhibition, entitled Citations & Renaissances, is inspired by the works presented in the exhibition Les Montmorency, une famille illustre.
The Montmorencies, an illustrious family: the historical exhibition at the Musée Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Thecontemporary art exhibition at the Musée Jean-Jacques Rousseau features the humorous and unusual world of Sabine Pigalle. The artist revisits classic paintings and portraits of women, adding touches of color and modernity that completely overturn our image of ancient times.
Can you imagine the noble Catherine Henriette de Balzac d'Entragues, Marquise de Verneuil and mistress of King Henri IV, wincing? Can we imagine Renée de France, Duchess of Chartres and youngest daughter of Louis XII, having fun with her jewels, placing them anywhere? Renaissance portraits are always serious, showing off their illustrious models to best advantage... But these subjects were also normal people, having fun, grimacing, playing!
In her own way, Sabine Pigalle humanizes these figures of the past, bringing them closer to us. Admittedly, it's hard to believe that a Renaissance noblewoman would sport a neon-green crest. But these humorous, offbeat touches are enough to create a very interesting alternative world. Straddling the border between the real and the dreamlike, Sabine Pigalle invites us to discover these women from a new angle, to take an interest in them, their lives and their stories.
This exhibition at the Musée Jean-Jacques Rousseau is an original way of delving into history. Don't miss this astonishing and entertaining artistic stroll!
