The Musée Zadkine, nestled in the heart of Paris's 6th arrondissement, is hosting an exceptional exhibition entitled Sculpter l'Époque, devoted to the artist Chana Orloff from November 15, 2023 to March 21, 2024. This is the first Parisian monographic exhibition dedicated to her since 1971. Bringing together more than a hundred works, this exhibition offers an opportunity to (re)discover an artist who was celebrated during her lifetime, but who remains unjustly unknown today, despite the significant presence of her work in French and international collections, notably in Israel.
Located near Chana Orloff's former studio on rue d'Assas, the Musée Zadkine is the ideal venue for this tribute. The exhibition is all the more evocative as Chana Orloff 's sculptures enter into dialogue with those ofOssip Zadkine, the master of the premises. These two artists, born in the Russian Empire and of Jewish origin - she in the Ukraine, he in Byelorussia - followed surprisingly parallel paths. Parisians at heart and familiar with the Montparnasse district, each in their own way left their mark on the art of their time.
Theexhibition reveals a strong and free Chana Orloff, an emblematic figure of theÉcole de Paris. It highlights the artist's major themes, notably portraiture - which enabled her to achieve economic independence - and the representation of the female body and maternity, approached with remarkable sensitivity and relevance. One section of the exhibition is devoted to Chana Orloff's sculptural bestiary, deeply nourished by Jewish symbolism and culture. The exhibition concludes with an evocation of her post-war work, marked by the horror of the Second World War and the realization of major monumental commissions for the State of Israel.
This exhibition has been conceived in partnership with the Ateliers-musée Chana Orloff and is supported by the Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Shoah. A podcast about the exhibition is also available, focusing on Chana Orloff 's recently rediscovered works looted during the Second World War. A unique opportunity to delve into the world of an artist who sculpted her era, while establishing a poignant dialogue with the present. Shall we drop by the Musée Zadkine, folks?
