Often associated with the minimalist and abstract movements, Robert Ryman is a complex, passionate and surprising painter. At first glance, his works may seem perplexing: little color or distinct form, monumental canvases, visible brushstrokes... The Musée de l'Orangerie aims to unveil the secrets of this renowned American artist, who is far more innovative than he appears.
From March 6 to July 1, 2024, discover the exhibition Robert Ryman. Le regard en acte, a retrospective event featuring numerous paintings, offers an overview of the painter's career and artistic approach.
Robert Ryman was an original artist, who broke away from the world of traditional art: he didn't seek to create illusion or meaning in his paintings, he refused to name them, he didn't wish to be exhibited in dialogue with another artist, he didn't want to talk about influence or inspiration...
The American was interested in technique, medium, the different supports and materials available to him. For him, every brushstroke was an in-depth study of the material. Gouache, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, etching, lithography: the artist tried his hand at many techniques, in order to find the specificity of each one.
Robert Ryman was passionate about the act of painting, and about the art object itself. He questioned the limits of the work, on the canvas, on the exhibition wall, he analyzed the effects of light on the painting, questioned how the work is integrated into a room, how long it can be seen by visitors... This singular artist appreciated painting in its simplest definition, art in its rawest, purest state.
A passionate approach, to which the Musée de l'Orangerie pays homage with an exhibition that lives up to Ryman's high standards. A curiosity not to be missed!
