Abus de souffle, Bertille Bak's humanist and committed photo exhibition unveiled at the Jeu de Paume

The Jeu de Paume invites us to discover the work of Bertille Bak, French photographer and visual artist, through an original exhibition presented from February 13 to May 26, 2024. The exhibition, Abus de souffle, offers an overview of the artist's world, her working methods, her struggles and her favorite subjects.

Bertille Bak is interested in the invisible, in those people and populations who are forgotten, sidelined, erased. To tell their real story, the artist immerses herself in these communities, learning their customs, their daily lives, their codes. This cohabitation gives rise to images that are truer, more sensitive, funnier and more poetic. Bertille Bak reveals the violence to which these populations are subjected, the way they are marginalized, while preserving the beauty and joy of everyday life, despite the violence.

We discover people, rituals and cultures, trades that have almost disappeared, rare skills... We also see the inequalities and struggles for survival of a people in the face of a globalized world.

Between documentary and poetic staging, Bertille Bak's works allow us to travel, to open up to different cultures, sometimes distant, sometimes very close. Photographs, videos and installations become an open window onto these invisible groups, but also onto their know-how, their culture, their daily lives.

The Jeu de Paume exhibition brings together several of the artist's reports, as well as previously unpublished subjects created especially for this artistic event. The scenography brings together different groups, showing their differences and, above all, their similarities.
