Over 80 years ago, France surrendered to the German army, and thousands of French people decided to join the resistance against Nazi occupation and the Vichy regime. A long internal war waged by ordinary citizens, heroes in the shadows who are still honored today.
The Shoah Memorial would like to pay tribute to some of these Resistance fighters, in a themed exhibition to be viewed free of charge from February 2, 2024. Discover Foreigners in the Resistance in France, an exhibition that paints a portrait of these activists committed to freedom, and against the Nazi ideology and regime.
Refugees or immigrants, naturalized foreigners: many of these soldiers of the shadows fought for France without having French nationality. Whether in France, its colonies or abroad, these Resistance fighters took part in important battles and actions that changed the course of history, right up to the liberation. The Shoah Memorial is particularly interested in the foreign Resistance members of the FTP-MOI.
Behind this acronym lies the Francs-tireurs et partisans - main-d'œuvre immigrée (FTP-MOI), a network of Communist-affiliated Resistance fighters. Among the famous figures of this unit were Missak Manouchian and his wife, Mélinée. An Armenian carpenter and poet who had fled the Armenian genocide, Missak Manouchian quickly became involved in the fight against the Occupation.
To honor their actions and sacrifice, the couple will be inducted into the Panthéon on February 21, 2024. An official tribute, which extends to all foreigners in the Resistance, and which inspired this historic and important exhibition.
