An original installation takes up residence at the Fondation Cartier this summer: from June 8 to September 8, 2024, the contemporary art center welcomes American artist Matthew Barney and his exhibition Secondary. In a reconstructed sports field, performers and videos respond to each other to tell a touching and profound story.
Matthew Barney questions our relationship with the body, health, sport and ageing, through a lively and powerful body of work. The central work in this exhibition is a complex video installation. Five films are shown simultaneously, on a re-imagined American sports field built into the exhibition space. On these videos, eleven dancers and performers follow one another in a highly symbolic show.
Secondary tells the story of a dramatic accident that marked the soccer game of August 12, 1978. During the game, Oakland Raiders defender Jack Tatum collided violently with opposing receiver Darryl Stingley. The accident left Stingley permanently paralyzed, putting an end to his career and traumatizing all those who attended the game.
Matthew Barney stages this story using older dancers. With this work, the artist questions our relationship with the body and our idea of health. Is sport really the pinnacle of healthy living? Does violence have a place in these activities and entertainments? What happens to us when our bodies don't perform as well as they used to? Through video, the American artist also plays with reality and its representation, truth and the way it is shown.
This is an important and almost universal culture that Matthew Barney calls into question with this exhibition. The tour is completed by a sculpture created especially for this exhibition, and a series of videos from earlier projects.
An original exhibition to get you thinking differently about our culture, at the Fondation Cartier.
