Discover contemporary artist Mehdi Qotbi and let yourself be carried away by his colorful, twirling universe, at the frontier between worlds and styles. The painter is honored in a retrospective exhibition organized by theInstitut du Monde Arabe, from October 15, 2024 to January 5, 2025.
The eponymousexhibition brings together dozens of works by Mahdi Qotbi, from the 1960s to the present day. The exhibition includes paintings, tapestries, graphics and ceramics.
Along the way, you can see the artist's style, techniques and universe change, refine and perfect themselves, culminating in these unique, highly recognizable works. Between France and Morocco, between the Arab and Western worlds, between Aimé Césaire, Octavio Paz, Monet and Klee, thecontemporary artist multiplies influences to create his own world, his own identity.
Mehdi Qotbi works with letters and literature. With his unusual stroke, he combines and mixes Arabic signs and letters of the French alphabet. The artist fills his canvases with swirls, lines and curves, offering his new writing to those who want to read it. This painter-writer collaborates with great authors, transforming his works into veritable literary creations. He has "written" his paintings with Andrée Chedid, Jacques Derrida, Léopold Sédar Senghor, Octavio Paz, Nathalie Sarraute...
Mehdi Qotbi's works are also distinguished by their colors: vibrant, joyful and elaborate, they bring their own language and meaning to these canvases.
Come and discover or rediscover this singular artist, thanks to the new retrospective at theInstitut du Monde Arabe.
