Rendez-vous aux Jardins is the must-attend event for all lovers of pretty gardens and green spaces, held every year on the first weekend in June. So, from May 29 to June 2, 2024, the French Ministry of Culture is inviting young and old alike to go behind the scenes of France's public and private gardens through workshops, conferences and exceptional guided tours.
Located in the heart of Saint-Denis, the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Paris Nord is a dynamic center dedicated to research in the humanities and social sciences. This institution plays a crucial role in the development of interdisciplinary research projects, focusing on themes such as migration, intercultural relations, the city and its transformations...
As a collaborative center, MSH Paris Nord facilitates exchanges between researchers from different disciplines and promotes international partnerships. The Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Paris Nord is thus a key player in the intellectual and social cartography of the Paris region and beyond. On the occasion of the Rendez-vous aux Jardins 2024, the site is organizing a number of creative workshops for all ages!
The Rendez-vous aux Jardins 2024 program at the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme :
Jardin secret pop-up workshop, for a primary school class, by reservation only
The Jardin secret pop-up workshop is in keeping with the theme of the event. It is offered in partnership with Plaine Commune's media libraries and Emma Giuliani, who has created a small booklet for an introduction to pop-up art. This object takes the form of a card to be cut out, featuring a marvellous garden. This manual and creative activity will enable pupils to leave with a pop-up card inspired by the artist and the garden.
Readings will also be offered in connection with the work of Emma Giuliani, specially dedicated to gardens.

À l'écoute du jardin, balade sonore,
Garden visit by Diane Schuh for a primary school class
The MSH Paris Nord garden is a place of biodiversity. It has been designed as a garden in motion: the species planted here are left free to reconquer, simply guided by a few annual mowings. The garden is inaccessible to humans for much of the year, allowing non-humans - plants, birds, insects, and sometimes cats - to make this territory their own.
During this walk, we invite participants to practice The Art of Attention by exercising our five senses. We'll be observing plants through magnifying glasses and discovering the relationships between them. We'll be able to touch and smell them. We'll discover the acoustics and sounds of the garden through listening exercises.
Diane Schuh is a musician and landscape gardener, and a doctoral student in music (at Université Paris 8 / Musidanse / CICM).

Workshop in the garden to present the BBDMI project
Brain Body Digital Music Instruments: making music with body and brain electricity
Demonstration of a research and creation project hosted at MSH Paris Nord, with electrodes placed on the bodies of musicians. A prototype device for spatial sound processing invites new ways of making and hearing music in the garden environment. We integrate the advances of the ANR BBDMI project to appropriate EMG and EEG technologies for music with body and brain electricity, developing prototypes of open source and open hardware instruments. Prelude to a concert by students from the Conservatoire de Musique de St-Denis.

Concert, Mixed improvisations in the garden
Concert by students from the Saint-Denis conservatory of music.
For over ten years, the Musiques Mixtes project has brought together students and teachers from the Saint-Denis conservatory with students and teacher-researchers from the CICM (Centre de recherches Informatique et Création Musicale) / Laboratoire MUSIDANSE (Université Paris 8) in a research-creation process based on the appropriation of new developments arising from the team's projects.
To prepare for this spring 2024, five young musicians have taken part in experimentation/prototyping workshops with the BBDMI team, and will be presenting improvisations using these devices and their instruments, to make music sound in the garden.
`Participating students : Simarline Ribot (harp), Inès Touati (flute), Mehdi Touati (percussion), Corinne Moullec (bass), Alain Stricher (violin).
With the collaboration of Céline Roulleau, Anne Hederer for the Saint-Denis conservatory, David Fierro and Alain Bonardi for BBDMI, Diane Schuh for CICM.
