Want to sip a good coffee like in Athens? Head for Yorgaki, a brand new Greek café in the 9th arrondissement, a few blocks from Pigalle. A very first Parisian"Kafeneion" installed more precisely on rue des Martyrs, for a unique choice of drinks and Greek culinary specialities.
And at Yorgaki, no machines or coffee maker as you may be used to, but a Briki, a kind of small pan where coffee, water and sugar are put, all cooked thanks to the heat of a pile of sand. A method still used today by the Bedouins in the desert, and which has made its way through the history of the Mediterranean, especially among the Turks who occupied Greece until the independence of the country in 1830. Concerning drinks, there are also Greek beers, such as the Fix or the Mythos.
As for culinary specialties, lovers of Mediterranean cuisine will be able to enjoy Tzatziki, Melitzanosalata, Tarama, Greek salad Choriatiki (based on tomatoes, cucumber, red onions, black olives, feta and spices), marinated anchovies or Kalamata olives. You can also be tempted by various desserts: Loukoums, Kourabies, Portokalopita produced locally or the famous Caprice cookies, a kind of fine Russian chocolate cigarettes. In short, something to treat yourself and travel under the Greek sun... Shall we go there, friends?
