Head to the Department of Islamic Art at the Louvre for a fabulous journey to the heart of Central Asia. From November 23, 2022 to March 6, 2023, the Louvre Museum invites us to admire the Splendors of the Oases of Uzbekistan, its exceptional exhibition that honors the cultures and arts of the great civilizations, from Iran to China.
Nearly 180 works are on display in the aisles of the Parisian museum; works that have been freshly restored and exceptionally loaned by institutions in Uzbekistan, Europe and America. This exhibition takes us through 16 different centuries, 16 centuries in which art was revealed in all its forms.
Statues, sculptures, jewelry, frescoes, ceramics, illustrations, art objects, clothing... The works are numerous, and all tell a story. From the first silk routes to the Renaissance, through the arrival of Islam in Central Asia in the 6th century, the exhibition shows us the long evolution of this exceptionally rich region.
Trade, wars, the spread of cultures and religions have allowed the different civilizations that have crossed the oases of Uzbekistan to diversify, to feed and to enrich themselves culturally. Peoples and countries have influenced each other along these routes, and this great mixture can be seen in the priceless treasures on display at the Louvre Museum.
In each section of this exhibition, exceptional works are highlighted. Some of them are leaving Uzbekistan for the very first time! We can admire the door of the Gur-e mir (Tamerlane's mausoleum), the Book of Wonders of the National Library of France, the wall paintings of the princely residences of Varakhsha... So many incredible historical and artistic pieces, which reflect the different cultures that made this region live.
The Louvre Museum takes us on a magnificent journey through these many impressive works, staged in an immersive space that almost makes us forget the outside world. These treasures and the audiovisual installations make us want to go on a trip to discover Samarkand.
Impossible to miss such treasures: go without delay to admire them! And to extend this journey, visit also the exhibition On the roads of Samarkand. Wonders of silk and gold, at the Institut du Monde Arabe.
