The Arcde Triomphe, another symbol of Paris after the Eiffel Tower, is a building steeped in history. The monumental entrance to " the most beautiful avenue in the world ", theArc de Triomphe was conceived by Napoleon I, who ordered the construction of a monument to the glory of the victorious soldiers and the French army, by decree published on February 18, 1806.
Initially planned to be built around the Bastille and Faubourg Saint-Antoine, the monument finally took up residence on the Place de l'Etoile, at the suggestion of the then Minister of the Interior, Champagny. Work was completed in 1836, under the reign of Louis-Philippe. Today, it houses the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as well as the " Eternal Flame ", symbolizing the memory of fallen soldiers. This flame is rekindled every day at 6 p.m., and you can witness this always moving moment.
49.54 m high, 44.82 m wide and 22.21 m deep, the Arche stands out on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, in the capital's 8th arrondissement. Tourists and fans of 360-degree views can visit this monument, as the interior features several rooms recounting the building's history, as well as a staircase with 284 steps. Avenue de la Grande Armée, Champs-Elysées, Grand Palais, Louvre along the avenue, then Sacré-Coeur on one side, Tour Montparnasse on the other, Eiffel Tower quite close by... The ideal spot for incredible photos. More than a view, a well-deserved reward after the long, particularly exhausting climb.
