Here's today's cute news: a king penguin was born at Sea Life Paris, in July 2023. But to limit human intervention with this newborn, we didn't yet know its sex or its name. After analysis of one of her feathers, it turned out to be a female penguin, and visitors to the aquarium chose her first name: Freya! This new representative of the species was eagerly awaited, as it is rarely seen in Europe. Since 2018 and the opening of the penguin farm, only 7 individuals have been born!
But how are these little penguins born? The single egg is kept warm by its parents (at around 34°C) in its "incubator niche", located between the abdomen and the legs, for almost 2 months. Its mother, Flocon, was the first chick born in the aquarium, which reproduces the natural habitat of polar penguins! With this new arrival, the colony now numbers 11 king penguins and 20 penguins.
If you'd like to meet this newborn, come to the Sea Life Paris aquarium!
