Jean Castex, aka the government’s “Mister Deconfinement”, recommended to ban trips outside your department for the Ascension weekend starting this Thursday May 21st, 2020 in order to limit to “massively take coronavirus to areas where it is not highly active so far”. A recommendation swept away by the executive.

As France has started a slow and gradual containment exit this Monday May 11th, 2020, some days coming up are worrying, such as Ascension weekend from Thursday May 21st to Sunday May 24th, 2020. A long weekend during which French are used to meet with families and go to the countryside to rest.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Jean Castex is worried the massive getaways departures could spread covid-19 that could circulate to zones where the virus is highly active to areas where it has been little active since the beginning of the epidemic.

The government’s Mister deconfinement proposed in his report to limit trips to within your home department for this weekend: “Ascension Thursday will be a public holiday, but we recommend it is banned to leave your department, excluding reasons authorized, to go on a getaway”.

The recommendation has been swept away by the executive. The Secretary of the Interior says this is not on the agenda and adds that “at this point, this is a recommendation from the report”. Yet, if deconfinement was not going as well as planned and the number of contaminations was to increase again, jeopardizing the country’s intensive care units, the government may have to turn the screw.

It is then absolutely possible to leave your home department within the 100km allowed.

If you want to go green for the weekend, "Somewhere over the RainbowIsrael Kamakawiwo'ole style is possible, whatever department you are in, as long as you stay 100km around you.
