If there are French coming home after traveling to Canada, Brazil, Australia, China or Japan, if there are French living abroad, outside the European Union, but wishing to go back to France soon, the French government invites them to self-isolate for two weeks starting from Wednesday May 20, 2020 because of the health crisis. But this self-isolation will be based on volunteering. This is what Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian announced on May 19th on LCI.
“Starting from Wednesday, we will ask all French (…) coming back to France and (those who are) staying in France to voluntarily submit to a two-week self-isolation to protect themselves and those around you” Jean-Yves Le Drian said, adding that this measure would also applies to returns from “outside the European Union”.
The Minister also recalls during this interviews that “borders outside the EU are closed and will remain closed excluding for French combing back”. The latter are invited to self-isolate for two weeks if they are willing to.
“Within the European space, we are not shutting down borders, simply performing controls, that will grow softer. What we need now is smooth coordination between all European countries so that we can gradually stop controls, even though there will be deep controls to uphold over time” the minister added before saying that France allowed 186,000 French to come back these past weeks.
