A British study published this Saturday in The Lancet Infectious Diseases indicates that people infected with the Delta variant of Covid-19are twice as likelyto be hospitalized than with the original strain, the Alpha variant. It is already known that thisDelta variant is 40% to 60% more transmissible, but information on its severity is still scarce.
The authors of the study were able to analyze data from around 43,000 cases of covid in England between March 29 and May 23, and found that patients are increasingly younger, with an average age of 29, compared with 31 for the Alpha variant. According to their research, the risk of being admitted tohospital is multiplied by 2.26 with the Delta variant. At the time of the study,three-quarters of patients were unvaccinated, and a quarter had received a single dose. Fully vaccinated patients accounted for just 1.8% of infections.
