Following the latest health defense council, the government has announced dates lifting measures at a press brief held this Thursday January 20, 2022 by Jean Castex and Olivier Véran. Compulsory outdoor facemask-wearing is to end on February 2, 2022.

As France keeps on fighting the coronavirus epidemic and the Omicron variant, indicators are breaking records when it comes to new contaminations and the incidence rate. The fifth epidemic wave has been a new challenge with the fight between the Delta and Omicron variants. The latter is now prevailing in the country. More contagious but less dangerous, the spread of this mutant is yet thoroughly followed.

In late 2021, the government multiplied restrictions to curb this epidemic rise while working for the implementation of a vaccine pass. This Thursday January 20, 2022, the executive gathered for a health council to come up with a calendar to lift restrictions. Following debates, Prime Minister Jean Castex and Health Minister Olivier Véran took the floor for a press conference. The calendar lifting restrictions has been unveiled, the end of compulsory facemask-wearing in city-centers lands on February 2, 2022.
