Faced with the increasing deforestation in Brazil, organizations are teaming up in Paris for a great walk for Amazonia and indigenous people, alongside several indigenous representatives. Meet on Saturday October 15, 2022, from 1:30 p.m., at Place de la Nation.

Solidarity is building up in Paris, faced with the destruction of biodiversity in Brazil. Several organizations and environmental NGOs including JiboianaPlanète AmazoneGreenpeaceSea ShepherdExtinction RebellionTerre AnimaMighty Earth and Envol Vert, are hosting a great walk for Amazonia and indigenous people in Paris. The march is to be held on Saturday October 15, 2022. The walk will leave at 2:30 p.m. from Place de la Nation and all the way down to Place de la Bastille, arriving circa 4:30 p.m. The goal of this major walk in Paris? Raising awareness about the dramatic deforestation in Amazonia, that has been increasing since 2019, when Jair Bolsonaro came to power.

The goal is to raise awareness about the alarming situation of indigenous people in Brazil and the rest of the world. “Guarding still preserved ecosystems, indigenous people have been watching about 80% of the world’s biodiversity (up to 10% in Amazonia only) according to UN’s date. And when these people disappear, the forest disappears too”, association Jiboiana writes on Facebook.

This great walk is to wake consciences, reminding deforestation in Amazonia is a world’s issue. “Consumption styles in Europe have direct consequences on deforestation and indigenous lands”, Jiboiana adds. For the walk, the organization encourages citizens to come dressed in colors, especially green to represent Nature.

During this great walk for Amazonia and indigenous people in Paris, several Brazilian Amazonia indigenous people representatives will be here including Siã and Busã (Huni Kuin people – State of Acre), Tukuma (Pataxo people – State of Bahia), Sam (Sateré Mawé – State of Amazonas), Val (Munduruku people – State of Rio Tapajos, Amazonia) and Thaline (Iny Karaja, State of Para, Amazonia). Following the walk in the city, the indigenous people representatives will share messages and songs on a stage – especially set up at Place de la Bastille. Climate organizations, French activists and European MEPs will also speak to the audience.

The six Amazonian indigenous people representatives are currently in Paris to raise awareness about protecting the planet’s green lung. After the French capital city, they will head to Brussels, from October 18, and to the EU Parliament and Commission.

Working for the Brazilian Amazonia indigenous people representatives, the Jiboiana association reminds this event is part of “a never-before-seen context, after EU MEPs passed a regulation forbidding the importation of products from deforestation or that contributed to the destruction of ecosystems into the EU market, this past Tuesday September 13.”
