Paris under 50°: that's the climate challenge the City of Paris is preparing for. On October 13, 2023, the capital will be staging a full-scale crisis exercise to deal with the future heatwaves that await us. So, what exactly is involved?

"Paris 50°": this is the name of the crisis exercise that the capital will be launching this Friday, October 13, 2023. Faced with global warming and heatwaves that are likely to multiply and intensify in the coming years, the City of Paris has decided to take matters into its own hands and do everything in its power to prepare for them. How can we do this? By setting up a full-scale simulation to test the capital's ability to withstand temperatures approaching 50 degrees.

Specifically, two arrondissements, the 13th and 19th, will be taking part in this crisis exercise. Pénélope Komitès, deputy mayor in charge of resilience, explained to BFM Paris Île-de-France that the aim is to"test a heatwave phenomenon that has not occurred until now, that is much longer in duration and that rises to a level, which we have never faced, of 50°C".

In addition to seeing whether the tools and organization of the municipality are capable of coping with such a phenomenon, this simulation should enable us to see " how residents will cope together ". The aim of this crisis exercise is"to make Parisians full players in the preparation and deployment of the crisis exercise, through role-playing and role-playing scenarios that test and reinforce the ability to cope collectively on the ground", Paris City Hall tells France Bleu Paris.

A world first, under almost real-life conditions with residents, Ehpad residents, elementary and middle school classes, the Paris Police Prefecture, civil protection associations, network operators and the Paris Fire Brigade. On October 17, a tabletop crisis exercise will be held in the City of Paris crisis room.

Traffic in the areas concerned may be disrupted during the exercise, so avoid the Danube and Place de Rungis districts wherever possible.
