Didier Deschamps had announced that he would remain coach of Les Bleus until at least the 2026 World Cup. On Wednesday January 8, he indicated that he would not be going any further, and would be stepping down immediately afterwards. But who will take over from him?

At the beginning of 2023, Didier Deschamps, after a fine performance at the World Cup in Qatar, announced the renewal of his contract as coach of the French national team with the FFF until 2026, the year of the next World Cup. In charge of Les Bleus since 2012, the coach finally decided to hang up his boots after the competition in the USA, and make way for his as yet unknown successor.

This Wednesday, January 8, 2025, on TF1's 1 p.m. news, Didier Deschamps made his departure official, saying that"things have to come to an end at some point". After 14 years of service and some fine achievements, including a second star for Les Bleus, he admitted that he would have liked it to never end, but that "you also have to know how to say stop, there's life afterwards." For him, the priority"is for the French team to stay at the top", but it remains to be seen who will take over from him.

Of course, another former international footballer has been under consideration for years: Zinédine Zidane. Zidane has been at Real Madrid since 2021, and is widely tipped by the French to become Les Bleus' next coach. In the meantime, who knows, Didier Deschamps could yet bring back a third star on the jersey!
