SUV parking in Paris: Parisians vote on a special rate this Sunday

In 2023, the Paris Council unanimously voted in favor of an unprecedented regulation adjusting parking rates according to car models. This Sunday, February 4, 2024, a new vote is calling on Parisians to create a special parking rate for these vehicles, a measure designed to discourage their use in the French capital and reduce the city's carbon footprint. The fate of SUV owners will be sealed very soon. How much will the increase be?

A new twist in the Paris parking affair... After announcing a new regulation aimed at revising parking prices according to car model, the City of Paris is organizing a vote for Parisians this Sunday, February 4, 2024. The initiative invites Parisians to vote for the introduction of a special parking rate for large SUVs. The measure, proposed by environmentalists, aims to discourage the use of these imposing vehicles by making them less financially attractive.

Progressive pricing will take into account several criteria, such as the vehicle's weight, size and parking time, as well as the environmental performance of its engine. However, exceptions could be made for large families and people on low incomes, to preserve fairness.

This initiative stems from the worrying role of SUVs in climate targets. The growing number of these vehicles in Paris raises concerns about their contribution to CO2 emissions. Indeed, in 2019, almost half of all SUV owners in France were registered in Paris.

David Belliard, deputy mayor of Paris in charge of transforming public space and mobility, supports this measure, pointing out in a tweet this Thursday, June 8, 2023 that "SUVs go against the city's adaptation to climate disruption". He asserts that these vehicles are not only useless in the urban environment, but also "dangerous, cumbersome and expensive to produce."

By adopting this new pricing system, Paris aims to limit the use of SUVs, recognized as major contributors to the increase in CO2 emissions worldwide, and thus reduce its carbon footprint.
