Parisians voted in the spring that self-service scooters will be leaving the capital by August 31, 2023, at the end of summer, without being replaced by a new mobility offering. But what will become of the 2,400 parking spaces reserved for them in the streets of Paris? Parking spaces are expensive in the city, and any space left vacant is quickly used for something else. Some elected officials would therefore like to reserve these spaces for cargo bikes, which are on the increase in the capital.
These large electrically-assisted bicycles, which are used to transport people, have difficulty finding a place to park or to wait for their customers. The 11,000 m2 of space left free by scooters represents a real opportunity for them, supported by the mayor of Paris's 5th arrondissement. She also hopes to convince delivery drivers to switch to this new means of transport, which is less cumbersome and more practical than vans, and above all more environmentally friendly!
These vacant spaces could also be reserved for Velib', which would then have a larger fleet at its disposal. What's certain is that they won't be converted for use by cars. In any case, David Belliard believes that"it's good news to have this public space back" and that it would be possible to"make bicycle paths, widen sidewalks, replant soil or trees". The answer to this question will be given on September 1, 2023, when scooters will have left the pavement!
