Street art arrives atUNESCO with a singular, monumental work by Vhils. Real name Alexandre Farto, Vhils is a street artist known the world over for his atypical creations. His style? To create fascinating portraits in walls, digging into the stone with a chisel, hammer or jackhammer. His themes? The impact of urbanity on landscapes and people's identities.
Although Vhils has already exhibited in Paris(Centquatre, Fluctuart...), several of his works can be admired in the capital, such as at Paris La Défense, more precisely in the Jardins de l'Arche. It's here that we can discover an impressive fresco by the artist, created as part of his project entitled Scratching the surface.
And this summer, one of his creations will make its debut atUNESCO, in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. The famous international institution, which is already home to over a thousand works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Sonia Delaunay, Dani Karavan, Isamu Noguchi and Roberto Matta, will be making room for street art.
" This superb creation by Vhils is in line with UNESCO's desire to celebrate contemporary artists and provide a platform where their creativity can be fully expressed," stated Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, in a press release published on July 5, 2023.
The work, created especially forUNESCO and due to be unveiled to the press on July 12, is a 31-meter-long fresco featuring eleven UNESCO World Heritage sites on different continents.
But this creation by Vhils is also a tribute to Ellen Wilkinson, British politician, feminist and reformer, who was President of the Organization's inaugural Conference.
