With just a few days to go before the inauguration of the extension to metro line 14, the enthusiasm of many Parisians is growing. On Thursday June 20, 2024, the Société des grands projets organized the "revelation" of the Hôpital Bicêtre station, in the presence of several elected officials, as well as architect Jean-Paul Viguier and Eva Jospin. The artist unveiled a monumental work, some 8 metres high, on the station's façade. We were there and tell you all about it.

It is one of the 8 new stations on line 14. After 5 years of construction work, the Hôpital Bicêtre station will welcome its first passengers on Monday June 24, 2024, at the official inauguration of the line 14 extension.

Located at the entrance to Hôpital Bicêtre, the new station is expected to accommodate 20,000 passengers a day over time, enabling users to connect the Val-de-Marne towns of Kremlin-Bicêtre and Gentilly withOrly airport in just 12 minutes, compared with 45 at present. The station, located in a densely populated urban area, will also soon be home to several redevelopment projects, including the Entrée de Ville Sud-Ouest eco-district in Kremlin-Bicêtre.

On Thursday June 20, 2024, a preview of the Bicêtre Hospital station was held, just four days before the opening of the line 14 extension. The event was attended by a number of elected representatives and project managers, including Jean-François Delage, Mayor of Kremlin-Bicêtre, Fatah Aggoune, Mayor of Gentilly, Bernard Cathelain, member of the Board of Directors of Société des grands projets, Laurent Probst, Managing Director ofÎle-de-France Mobilités, and former Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, who came to applaud his daughter, artist Eva Jospin. Eva Jospin and architect Jean-Paul Viguier also attended the event, which was open to the press.

All were smiling broadly from the podium set up for the occasion in front of the station. It has to be said that this extension is eagerly awaited by many Parisians, who want to get around the Île-de-France region more easily. Although Kremlin-Bicêtre already has a metro station (on line 7), the town's mayor was delighted to have a second, with the opening of this station, 42 years after the first. For his part, the mayor of Gentilly emphasized the beauty of Eva Jospin's work, which he described as " a plunge into the ancient roots of our town ".

Visual artist Eva Jospin, known for her cardboard forest landscapes, was delighted to be part of the project. " It's a chance " to have a permanent work in a public place, she said, pointing out that this is "the biggest public art project in Europe ".

The 68 future stations in the Grand Paris Express network will bring together art and architecture. For each station, an artist and an architect work in tandem. For the Hôpital Bicêtre station, visual artist Eva Jospin collaborated with the architectural firm Jean-Paul Viguier et associés. The architect imagined a building with a glazed roof, allowing light to flood in. Wood also features prominently, notably on the ceiling, while Eva Jospin's work, designed in two parts, is visible from the outside. Eva Jospin's work, designed in two parts, can be seen from the outside: on the station's exterior façade, the artist created her 8-metre-high, 106-square-metre work.

Resembling a concrete rock face made up of superimposed strata, Eva Jospin's work also reveals bronze creepers drawn from cardboard models. The artist explains that she was inspired by Fellini's film " Roma", in which ancient wonders buried for years resurface via the construction of the metro.

The station, which has 3 entrances serving the communes of Kremlin-Bicêtre and Gentilly, has three levels, with platforms 26 meters deep. At the time of our visit on Thursday June 20, trains from line 14 were running without passengers. The dry run will continue until the official inauguration. A little more patience, then, and we look forward to seeing you on Monday June 24, 2024, when you can officially discover the Hôpital Bicêtre station and climb aboard the first trains!
