This Friday,November 29, 2024, will be Emmanuel Macron 's final visit to the building site! Starting at 10.15am, the President of the Republic, accompanied by his wife, will stroll the aisles of this Gothic masterpiece, which has now been transformed. Guided by Mgr Laurent Ulrich, Archbishop of Paris, and surrounded by numerous experts, Emmanuel Macron will discover the latest transformations to Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, carried out since the devastating fire of April 15, 2019.
This solemn moment will open in front of the new natural stone paving, offering a luminous beige hue in stark contrast to the gray cobblestones of 2019, witnesses to a tragedy still etched in our memories.
Inside, a veritable"resurrection" is in store, according to Philippe Jost, president of the public institution in charge of restoration. The blond stones, stripped of the blackness accumulated over the centuries, the restored stained-glass windows and the rebuilt vaults will illuminate the nave with an unprecedented brilliance. This unprecedented brightness will also be reflected in the liturgical furnishings, including a bronze baptistery designed by a Drôme-based designer, and in the choir's gilded cross, whose chandelier will have been completely revived.
The tour will also include an immersion in the new framework, reconstructed using medieval techniques and over a thousand carefully selected oak trees. This meticulous reconstruction, restoring Notre-Dame's famous "forest" character, culminates in the spire designed by Viollet-le-Duc, which has once again towered over the Paris skyline since last February. A state-of-the-art fire-fighting system, including a misting system, will also have been installed to prevent any recurrence.
The murals in the Saint-Marcel chapel, sometimes compared to the Sistine Chapel for their restored brilliance, will be among the highlights of this metamorphosis. The restored brilliance of the colors will contrast with the previous state, tarnished by decades of pollution. Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron will also contemplate emblematic works, such as the giant reliquary destined to house Christ's Crown of Thorns, scheduled to return for a special celebration on December 13.
The presidential tour will conclude with a vibrant tribute to the 2,000 craftsmen and experts who have contributed to this titanic project. These modern builders, dubbed "the new builders", will receive an honorary diploma tomorrow, symbolically presented by the French Minister of Culture. A family photo in the nave will immortalize this historic moment.
Then, from December 7 onwards, we'll be able to rediscover Notre-Dame in a whole new light, accompanied by the majestic sounds of the completely cleaned and harmonized organ. A grand opening ceremony with an event concert is scheduled. In the meantime, the "Notre-Dame se révèle" program on France 2 promises to reveal what goes on behind the scenes of this rebirth, to be followed this Friday morning.
