With fares set to rise on January 1ᵉʳ 2025, the all-zone Navigo Pass will now cost €88.80 a month. An alternative, the Liberté+ card, charges only for your actual journeys. So, which of these subscriptions is the most cost-effective based on your commuting habits?

From 1ᵉʳ January 2025, Île-de-France Mobilités is introducing a new fare structure that will impact Parisians and Franciliens. The Navigo all-zone pass, now priced at €88.80 per month, continues to offer unlimited access to all the region's transport services. The Liberté+ card , on the other hand, charges per journey, at €1.99 for the metro, train or RER, and €1.60 for the bus or streetcar. Which of these options is right for you depends mainly on how often you travel.

For those who use public transport on a daily basis, the Navigo Pass is generally the most cost-effective, especially if your employer pays 50% of the cost. This reduces the cost to €44.40 per month, a significant saving for regular commuters. But what if your journeys are less frequent?

Here are a few examples:

  • For exclusive bus and streetcar users, with the Liberté+ card, each journey costs €1.60. If you travel less than three days a week (around 6 journeys), your monthly bill will not exceed €39, making Liberté+ more economical. However, once you reach 28 journeys a month (14 round trips), Navigo becomes more advantageous.

  • For users combining metro, RER and bus, a single trip with Liberté+ costs €3.59. Here again, if you exceed 13 journeys per month (7 round trips), Navigo offers a better alternative, thanks to its fixed cost.

  • For occasional trips, Liberté+ is a flexible and economical option. For example, a weekly metro or RER journey will cost you around €30 a month, far less than the Navigo subscription.

However, another factor comes into play: the new single-ticket pricing system, which reduces the options available and sets the cost at €2.50 for a metro/RER journey or €2 for a bus/tram journey (excluding Liberté+). This change simplifies choices, but could put a strain on the wallets of regular users.

Finally, for specific journeys such as those to Orly or Roissy, the Navigo Pass, which includes these routes at no extra cost, is often the wisest choice.

In conclusion, the classic Navigo Pass remains a safe bet for regular travelers benefiting from partial reimbursement. But for occasional users, the Liberté+ card offers a suitable solution, allowing you to pay only for what you use. Before making your choice, you need to calculate your average number of journeys per month.
