Not all the facilities are ready for Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. But as the Olympic Village is about to be done, by late 2023, there are some concerns about the athletes’ quality of life during the competition because of the lack of A/C in bedrooms. For the record, Paris Olympics will take place between July and August, two very hot months in 2022, both hit by intense heatwaves. And for 2024, the climate conditions are a serious concern to take into account.
14,000 people are expected to this Olympic village located by the Seine, between Saint-Denis, Saint-Ouen and Île Saint-Denis. The OCOG wished a green project with materials dedicated to energetic performance, carbon neutrality and seven hectares of greenery. But, the rooms’ temperature – a major issue for a speedy recovery of athletes – is not to everyone’s taste. There will be only a 6 degree-difference between the outside and the inside, namely 32°C (89.6°F) in if 40°C (104°F) out.
The question was re-studied since the past summer’s hot temperatures, but it is likely to harm the carbon footprint. OCOG general director Etienne Thobois started a “specific workgroup on the matter, especially relying on the expertise of international federations”. The latter “already try to find solutions and find another place to stay”, an influent player of the sports world, anonymously interviewed by 20 Minutes, claimed.
