Day after day they multiply, and it's a constantly renewed joy that runs through theFrench team's supporters. The French fencers have won another medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and not just any medal: silver!
The epee team climbed to the top on July 30, 2024. They racked up one victory after another on the Grand Palais piste, culminating in the final against the Italian team. Marie-Florence Candassamy, Auriane Mallo-Breton and Coraline Vitalis battled with rage and finesse against their rivals, but failed to take the gold.
Of course, Les Bleues could count on the fine blade ofAuriane Mallo-Breton, individual Olympic vice-champion, to put the pressure on the Italians. Coraline Vitalis, five-time European champion, and Marie-Florence Candassamy, 2023 world champion, also made their opponents sweat. Substitute Alexandra Louis-Marie also took to the track for the penultimate duel.
Italy is a great fencing nation: in fact, the women's epee team is number 1 in the world. At the Grand Palais this evening, the French took on Giulia Rizzi, Alberta Santuccio and Rossella Fiamingo. The Italians seized the right opportunities at the strategic moment, winning the final by sudden death.
This encounter and the various duels thus brought their share of emotions, fears and joy. As ever, the spectators at the Grand Palais gave their voices in support of our French epeeists. Les Bleues led for a long part of the match, before finally losing. The final score was 30-29 for Italy.
This is yet another medal for France, the 18th since the start of the Games. And let's hope it doesn't stop there! The French fencing team continues the competition tomorrow with the men's sabre team event.
