Directed by Cédric Klapisch and co-written with Santiago Amigorena, Deux Moi continues Klapisch's tradition of exploring human relationships in a contemporary, urban setting. This intimatedrama stars Ana Girardot and François Civil, two thirtysomething Parisians struggling with emotional loneliness despite a hyper-connected world. The film follows their individual trajectories, punctuated by the disillusionment of digital encounters, the anxiety of everyday life and the quest for authentic connection. Set against the backdrop of a dense, silent capital, Deux Moi offers a bittersweet reflection on modern relationships.
Deux Moi will be available on Netflix from April 2, 2025 and already on Prime Video.
Synopsis: Rémy and Mélanie are thirty years old and live in the same neighborhood in Paris. She keeps having failed dates on social networks, while he struggles to meet someone. Both are victims of the loneliness of big cities, in these hyper-connected times when we think that meeting should be easier... Two individuals, two journeys. Without realizing it, they are taking two roads that will lead them in the same direction... that of a love story?
Deux Moi could particularly appeal to an urban adult audience, aged between 25 and 45, sensitive to the themes of loneliness, modern love and urban malaise. The film adopts a melancholy tone, close to the daily reality of young working people in the city, and could appeal to those who enjoyed Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain or L'Auberge espagnole, while adopting here a more composed and introspective tone. Fans of fast-paced narratives or classic romantic comedies may be less concerned, as the approach here is contemplative and focused on the characters' interiority.
With Deux Moi, Cédric Klapisch continues his exploration of modern life, between emotional isolation and the search for meaning, by following two mirrored souls played by Ana Girardot and François Civil. The film aptly tackles the paradoxes of hyperconnection and urban solitude, while offering a glimpse of hope for a sincere encounter.
Our opinion of Deux Moi:
Deux Moi is a film about isolation in big cities! The two protagonists are neighbors, they take the same subway every morning, go to the same shops and yet they've never seen each other! All presented with shots that are both funny and poetic.
Thestory touches on many aspects of modern life in megacities, where it's both so easy and so complicated to meet people! Social networks allow us to meet up withold classmates (such as the very funny Pierre Niney) or to meet "one-night stands" who aren't always very smart...
Special mention must be made of the two psychotherapists, played by François Berléand and Camille Cottin, who, each in their own style, help their patients put their suffering into words. You have to know how to rebuild yourself andaccept yourselfas you really are if you are toblossom andopen up to others.
François Civil and Ana Girardot play depression with disconcerting accuracy. From pallid zombies on autopilot at the start of the film, they reveal their true selves as they gain self-confidence.
All of this is interspersed with the kind of out-of-context comedy that Klapisch is so good at!
All in all, a rather slow film with no real suspense, but an original one that goes much deeper than it looks, and still has the merit of talking about depression in a humorous, non-stigmatizing way.
