Every year, the 7th art takes center stage at the César awards ceremony. This Friday, February 23, 2024, the 49th edition of this not-to-be-missed event for French cinema took place on the legendaryOlympia stage. At the end of a ceremony presided over by Valérie Lemercier, Justine Triet 's film Anatomie d'une Chute was voted (obviously!) best film of the year.
Big favorites of the year, Thomas Cailley 's Le Règne Animal and Justine Triet 's Anatomie d'une Chute walked away with 5 Césars and 6 Césars respectively - including the trophy for Best Direction for Justine Triet, who becomes the second director (!) to win this precious award after Tony Marshall for Vénus Beauté in 2000, and the fifth female director to win the Best Film statuette.
The Goldman Trial, nominated in numerous categories, ended up with just one statuette, but not the least of which was Best Actor for Arieh Worthalter. Raphaël Quenard, also a great favorite and a true revelation of French cinema, made his mark with a speech that was as funny as it was moving, when he won the César for Male Revelation of the Year.
The actor was also nominated in an unprecedented three categories (Best Actor, Best Male Revelation, Best Documentary Short) for three different films(Yannick by Quentin Dupieux, Chien de la Casse by Jean-Baptiste Durand, L'Acteur which he co-directed with Hugo David).
The ceremony was also marked by a poignant speech by Judith Godrèche, who recently lodged a complaint against Benoît Jacquot and Jacques Doillon, in front of a silent audience. The actress subsequently received a standing ovation from the entire assembly, while her powerful words still echoed in the Olympia auditorium.
On a lighter note, two honorary Césars, one to Christopher Nolan, who toppled the box office last year with Oppenheimer, the other to Agnès Jaoui, who has won no less than 6 Césars throughout her career - one as actress, one as director, four as screenwriter and a 7th tonight. The César for Best Foreign Film went to Monia Chokri's Simple comme Sylvain, despite the nomination of Christopher Nolan'sOppenheimer... which was present in the audience.
