The Oscars are all about cinema, of course, but they're also about music. Like every year, the famous ceremony rewarding the best films of the year was marked by several musical performances. For this 2024 edition, the Oscars struck a blow with the performance of... Ryan Gosling!
Although the Canadian is an actor, not a singer, he brightened up the evening with his pink-clad rendition of 'I'm Just Ken' from the film Barbie. Watch his offbeat performance below:
But it was Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O'Connell 's song that won theOscar for Best Original Song 2024. With this hit, also written for Greta Gerwig's film Barbie, the siblings won their second Oscar in two nominations!
The other singers nominated in the same category also performed their songs on stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. They included Diane Warren with 'The Fire Inside' from Eva Longoria's film Flamin' Hot, Jon Batiste with 'It Never Went Away' from American Symphony, and Scott George who wowed the audience with 'Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)', a Native American song composed for Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon and sung with the help of a troupe of Osage singers.
Finally, let's not forget the performance ofAndrea Bocelli and his son Matteo, who sang 'Con te partirò' during the In Memoriam sequence paying tribute to the personalities of the film world who died in 2023. This moment of contemplation began with an excerpt from Alexeï Navalny's documentary Navalny, which won the Oscar for Best Documentary last year. Navalny, an opponent of the Russian regime, died in a Russian prison in mid-February.
Christopher Nolan's film Oppenheimer also took the prize for Best Original Score.
